ERC Embarks on Training Adventure with Calgary Rowing Club

In the heart of the Rockies, where the winds whisper through the valleys and the lakes mirror the surrounding peaks, lies Lake Windermere—a perfect setting for rowing enthusiasts to hone their skills. Recently, members of the Edmonton Rowing Club (ERC) seized the opportunity to join forces with the Calgary Rowing Club (CRC) for a challenging, yet entertaining, training camp in mid-April.

Nine dedicated rowers from ERC, comprising seven juniors and two seniors, made the journey to Lake Windermere for a weekend of intensive training. Despite the unpredictable weather conditions typical of the Rockies, these athletes were undeterred in their pursuit of rowing on water.

Over the course of the weekend, the group planned to tackle six planned rows. Navigating their way through windstorms and choppy waters they tried to make the most of their time on the water, squeezing in four sessions, refining their technique.

When the weather forced them off the lake, the juniors jumped into on-land sessions with CRC coaches, exchanging laughter, scraping knees, and learning new innovative ideas for dry-land training. It was a testament to their resilience and adaptability—a reminder that true growth often happens outside our comfort zones.

The journey from Edmonton to Invermere was not just a physical one; it was a bonding experience shared between athletes, coaches, and parents. Traveling in a 15-passenger van with two dedicated chaperones, the juniors forged memories that will last a lifetime, strengthening the bonds of friendship and camaraderie along the way.

This successful training weekend wouldn’t have been possible without the meticulous planning and support from Scott, the juniors’ coach, and the entire CRC team. From providing shells and coaching boats to orchestrating the intricate details of the weekend itinerary, CRC ensured that every aspect of the camp was tailored to optimize the athletes’ experience.

As the sun sets on the Invermere training camp, attending members of the ERC have an opportunity to reflect on this journey – challenges overcome, developing a growth mindset, new technique tactics to bring home, and bonds forged with team mates. In the heart of the Rockies, they discovered the true spirit of rowing: a relentless pursuit of excellence, fueled by passion, perseverance, and the unwavering support of a community united in its love for the sport.
