Intro to Rowing

A single 4-hour experience focused on what it’s like to row. From indoor rowing and technical lessons in our indoor rowing tank, to a final excursion in a real racing shell in the water, you will get a taste of rowing before deciding to commit to our Learn to Row program.

Twelve (12) hours of 6 hands-on lessons spread over 3 weeks designed to teach you how the basics of rowing and get you and your crew moving through the water. Courses are offered May through September on Mon/Wed, Tues/Thurs, or 3-hour courses over 3 Saturdays.

Learn to Train

For Learn to Row graduates or those rowers returning to the sport after a significant hiatus, you will be partnered with other experienced rowers in our coached sport sessions. Mixing with experienced members will not only help you hone your skills, but will help introduce you into our rowing community.

As a sport rower, you will row in a variety of boats with various members as assigned by our coaches, or work with other members to create your own training crew. Gain confidence and independence. Progress towards your goals whether they may be fitness, proficiency, or racing.

Excel with rowing.

Senior / Under 23

Compete against with other competitive rowers training up to 10 times per week, with dedicated coaching. As a competitive rower, you have the opportunity to attend provincial and inter-provincial regattas throughout the season including Alberta Open, Henley, and Head/Tail of the Gorge.

Masters (21+)

As a competitive masters rower, you have the opportunity to train up to 10 times per week as conditioning for provincial and inter-provincial masters regattas including Alberta Open, Henley Masters, Masters Championships, and Head/Tail of the Gorge.

Member Programs

Any athlete can move between programs based on athlete ability. Generally, crews start to form in the spring, however, you can join any adult rowing program at any time in the season.

Learn to Train – Continue your learning

Requirements: learn to Row (LTR) graduate or previous rowing experienced. Ages 18+

Fees: $160 + ERC/ARA insurance fees if not already paid in LTR

The Learn to Train (LTT) program is geared towards rowers who have either recently graduated from a Learn to Row program or are coming back to rowing after a hiatus from the sport. This is not a membership in the club, but a transition into becoming a membership for those that need some extra help honing their skills with experienced rowers and coaches.

In this program you will hone your boat-handling skills, improve your technique, and build your rowing fitness to help reach your goals in a fun and engaging environment. By the end of the LTT, you can expect to have gained the skills necessary to join our Club as a member.

The program fee covers four sessions within our sport rowing sessions in which you will be partnered with other skilled rowers. Sport rowing is offered weekday evenings, and weekends. To get the most out of your rowing experience, you are expected to come to all practices for which you have registered.

Once complete, your course fees, up to $280 can be applied towards a 2024/2025 annual membership (ending on March 31, 2025).

Benefits: This program will allow you to improve your rowing technique and fitness levels.

Safety: All learn to Train sessions are taught by our coaching staff.

Sport rowing – fitness, fun, friendship

Requirements: learn to Train graduate or experienced rower. Age 18+.

Frequency: Row as often as you’d like during Sport Rowing scheduled hours.

Cost:

  • Annual membership $620 + RCA/ARA insurance fees*
  • Post-Secondary Student membership $400 + RCA/ARA insurance fees* (April 1 – Aug 31)

The Sport Rowing program is a recreational program for graduates of our Learn to Train program or those with previous rowing experience. This program is the next step for new members who have completed Learn to Train, as well as any member who is looking to row with a less rigorous training schedule. Sport rowers typically row three to four times per week in a variety of boats.

Community, fitness, and fun are the primary objectives of Sport Rowing, with racing in regional regattas being secondary. All Sport Rowing members are provided with training goals and regular on water coaching during practice. 

Additional Commitments: All Sport Rowing members must commit to volunteering for 2 bingos and 20 hours of volunteer service provided to the ERC in support of club maintenance (e.g. dock moving) and ERC events.

*RCA/ARA insurance fees are only payable once per year. If these fees were paid in another program such as Learn to Row, they will not be applied again to your membership.

Competitive Under 23 (18+) (April 1 – Aug 31)

Requirements: All competitive rowers. Ages 18+.

Frequency: Training minimum 6 practices per week.

Cost: $635 + RCA/ARA insurance fees*

The Senior program is for athletes who are over 18 and racing 2000m. This program applies to those athletes currently enrolled in a post-secondary program with membership valid from April 1 to Aug 31, 2024. 

The program includes a wide range of athletes; from those who are currently rowing in a university program and wish to continue training over the summer, to those who wish to continue pursuing a competitive rowing program at the club. Practices are held in the mornings and afternoons.

This ERC program competes at all provincial regattas including the Alberta Open and some interprovincial programs such as NWIRA and Royal Canadian Henley.

The head coach for this program is Walter Martindale.

Additional Commitments: All Sport Rowing members must commit to volunteering for 2 bingos and 20 hours of volunteer service provided to the ERC in support of club maintenance (e.g. dock moving) and ERC events.

Competitive Masters (21+)

Requirements: Experienced rower with. Ages 18+.

Frequency: Best to train 4-5 days per week.

Cost: $1000 + RCA/ARA insurance fees*

This program is designed for you if you are 21+ and would like to continue rowing at a competitive level while balancing other commitments. The objective is to form crews that are compatible in technical competency, physical ability and age. Crews generally practice up to 5+ times per week and often compete in numerous races from June to October.

The head coach for this program is Walter Martindale.
