A Little Introduction to Concept 2 Rowers

We have nine Concept2 rowers at our Indoor Training Facility. As part of annual membership, members have access to the Concept2 rowers in the “Erg Room”, which makes up half of our Indoor Training Facility. The Indoor Facility is available to all members, either at the leisure all year or during scheduled coached sessions during the off-season.

In 1981, Dick and Pete Dreissigacker created the Concept2 Indoor Rower, which swiftly became the best-selling rowing machine in the world. Now several models later, it’s used every day by Olympic athletes, cardiac rehab patients, individuals at home and every caliber of rower in-between. It is undoubtedly the gold standard of indoor rowers in the rowing community.

When Dick and Peter Dreissigacker were designing the first Concept2 Indoor Rower in 1981, they wanted it to do two things

  1. provide a good simulation of the rowing stroke and
  2. provide a useful, comparable measure of the work being done.

The latter point is what drove them to create an ergometer. Indeed, the first Concept2 Indoor Rower was called the “Concept2 Rowing Ergometer.” An “ergometer” (“erg” for short) is a device that measures work. Concept2’s Indoor Rowers, are ergometers and this is a feature that sets them apart from many other exercise machines on the market.
