COMPETITIVE ROWING / GO FOR GOLD
COMPETITIVE ROWING (SENIOR / OPEN)
Our Competitive program is designed for adults (19+) who are passionate about racing. Led by Rowing Canada certified coaches, this program offers rigorous training for athletes who want to push their limits and compete at high levels. Open to experienced rowers, competitive members train multiple times a week – including early mornings – to maximize speed and endurance.
This program is commitment-driven: consistency and teamwork are key. You’ll be part of a tight-knit squad, supporting each other to achieve personal bests. Team dynamics matter: each practice builds crew harmony for race day. If you thrive in a focused, intense, environment, you’ll fit right in.
“Joining the competitive team has been transformative. I went from out-of-shape mom who hadn’t picked up an oar in 17 years to sitting at a start line ready to lay it all on the line. Coaching is excellent, and my teammates are a second family. The sunrise workouts are the best part of my day.” – Jenn P., Masters Competitive Rower
WHAT TO EXPECT
- Schedule: Monday to Friday, 5:15 – 7:15 AM (with the option to join Sport weekday evening sessions). Weekend sessions include time trials and long-distance pieces. In winter we substitute erg and weight training.
- Regattas: Expect to compete in most major events: Alberta Open, Dino Sprints (Calgary), Western Canada Sprints (Regina), Royal Canadian Henley. We also host local regattas. Races provide goals to train for – it’s exciting to line up at the start after months of effort.
- Expectations: Consistency is key. You’re required to attend practices regularly and communicate absences in advance. A 2K erg standard is required to join the team. Coaches review individual progress and set performance goals together with you.
- Support: Athletes work together to arrange travel logistics (transportation, hotels). You won’t be alone!
- Coxwains: If interested, coxswains are also valued team mebers (coxwains need not be rowers).
FAQ
I've never raced - can I join?
Yes, first-year racers are welcome (there is a “Novice” racing category). The only caveat is the requirement to pull a sub-8:00 minute 2K erg test for women, and sub-7:00 minute 2K erg test for men. If these times are not yet attainable, we’ll have you develop your strength and speed with our Sport program. If requirements can be met, we’ll put you in a suitable boat and mentor you through your first regatta. It’s common to feel nervous, but we go through starting drills and race strategy in practice.
What if I work a shift job?
Competing with the ERC demands time. Talk to our coach – morning-only (5:15 AM) participation is possible. But, in fairness to crews training for the Royal Canadian Henley, attendance is mandatory.
Do I need to buy gear?
No. ERC provides top-quality racing shells and oars. You’ll need an ERC unisuit for races (approximately $100).
Can I join mid-season if I have experience?
Yes – see our Experienced Rowers page for details. Typically we’ll have you do a trial row to see which program and boat best suits you. A requirement to hit specified 2K erg targets is mandatory to join the Competitive crew.
How do I know if I'm ready?
If you have rowing experience and want to race, talk to our coach who will walk you through our requirements, schedule, and training targets. Don’t worry, he’s pretty awesome and will help you identify if this is the program for you. Email our coach here.
