A total of 32 clubs from Canada and the US with 537 athletes competed for top honours at Elk Lake, Vancouver Island over the past weekend. The ERC fielded 33 boats in 19 events, and demonstrated once again the growing strength of our program, even managing to bring home some hardware from this highly competitive regatta.
Congratulations and top honours go to Isabelle and Aline Belzil who beat 13 other boats through heats and semi-finals to take top honours in the Women’s Jr. A 2x. Congratulations also to Steve Fitzjohn who won the Master’s 1x D-F final.
The Club scored a number of other impressive results.
On the men’s side, Michael Hohnstein and Cody Anderson came out of the time trials to win the C-Final in the men’s pair with a very respectable time of 7:21. They were the 2nd Jr. A boat overall in the finals. Gregor and James Allan were 3rd in the Jr.A 2x.
On the women’s side, the Open 8+ once again showed great form in placing 2nd in the final, only 3 seconds shy of victory. A knowledgeable Victoria observer was overheard to say “That is a beautifully rowed boat.” The Open Women’s 2- was another strong showing. Coming out of time trials, our women placed 2 boats in the A-Final: Andrea Labrecque and Amanda Cinnamon, and Mallory Turner and Jess Phillips. They placed 4th and 5th respectively in the Final.
Isabelle Belzil competed in the Open Women’s 1x. She placed 8th out of 37 rowers coming out of the time trial, and raced in the B-Final coming in 5th. She was second Junior overall. Aline Belzil raced through the heats and semis to place 2nd in the Jr. B 1x Final as well.
Congratulations to coaches Ali Williams and Terry McKall for this great showing for our Club. We know that they won’t let any athlete rest on their laurels for long – not with Henley just around the corner!
